What Is In Your Cart?

First I want to mention my friend Paula who, by the way, has a wonderful way with words; you can just see in your mind's eye what she describes. Go over there and pay her a visit (click on her name [above]; instantly you are there). Her last two blogs (which I didn't get to read until today) are full of interesting facts, tips, ideas and history. But if you pay her a visit, be sure and read the blog she wrote a day or so ago, the one where she cut the tip of her finger off. If nothing else, send her a word of encouragement (or a gross tale of your own [wink]).

Now, let's charge ahead to my own blog. Does anything out there think it's weird to want to know what is in someone else's shopping cart? Well, that curious someone is me. Ms. Nosy. Ms Snoopy. I just can't help it. I'm always checking out other carts and at the same time wondering why they selected particular items. I sometimes even ask the clerk, "Hey, what is everyone buying today?" They usually get this far-away look, a little miffed, before they answer. Most of the time, I don't think they pay the slightest bit of attention to what is rolling forward in front of their cash registers. One girl (who has come to expect my questions) told me that bananas were her most popular item. Bananas? Well, okay. Not very exciting but... Hey look! Bananas are on my list today, too. Doesn't that just make you want to ask why? Why, you say? Bananas are a great source of potassium. I started eating them when I was pregnant with my second child. Why? Because they stopped my intense leg cramps. That's why I still eat them, because I never, ever want to get another Charlie Horse. Another plus? a pretty decoration in my beveled glass fruit bowl.

So tell me, why do you buy bananas?

Yesterday evening I saw one of our local attorneys, a spinster who has worked way past the age social security kicks in, outside of Big Lots leaning into/bracing her shopping cart like it was going to keep her from falling flat on her face. Inside was a bag of pet food, bird seed (because she so loves her songbirds. Hey, I can relate), cans of soup, a box of something I couldn't read inside a plastic sack, paper towels and best of all, two big boxes of solar lights. Oh wow! I love those things. Where was she going to put them? Up her driveway and around her deck, of course. Even I have enough good manners than to ask how much she paid for them, but I was intensely curious. If Dwain hadn't been around trying to tug me back to the car, I'd have run right back inside. You can't believe how many places around my house I could use those things. I was actually at Big Lots looking for some off-white tab top curtains that I'd seen a couple of days ago. Shoot! I should have bought them when I had the chance. I mean, who knew that they'd disappear that fast? I was lamenting my disappointment when my lawyer friend said, "If you see it at Big Lots, you better get it right then."

So, what's on my shopping list today?

  • Bread
  • Chew Bones for PupDog
  • Tuna
  • Diet Dr. Pepper (one case)
  • I Can't Believe It's Not Butter
  • Feta Cheese
  • Oatmeal
  • Eggs
  • Peanut Butter
  • Ice Tea Bags
  • Freezer Bags
  • Toilet Paper
  • Paper Towels (the good absorbent kind)
  • An SD Memory Card
  • AAA batteries
  • Wrapping paper & bow
  • AND
  • Bananas

To tell you what I planned to do with all these items would take another whole blog, so I'll spare you the details -- this time, anyway.

How are all of you going to spend your LONG, but not long enough, Memorial weekend? We're doing what we always do, helping decorate my MIL's family/country cemetery the old fashioned way. There will be huge numbers of people placing gaudy flowers over the graves of dear loved ones. A picnic will follow (keep your fingers cross that it doesn't rain).

So, what's on your shopping list this Memorial Weekend? Believe me, I'm intensely curious. Go ahead. Spill your guts. I like lots of details about what you plan to do with what you buy. And BTW: thank you Paula for giving me an idea about what to do with my old red-rimmed white pot. An herb garden. Super idea!
